Founded in Japan in 2016, Subu created a new footwear category with its signature “winter sandals.” The brand emerged from the simple desire for a comfortable, warm, and convenient shoe for quick outdoor trips in cold weather, inspired by the Japanese custom of removing shoes indoors. The concept was conceived by founder Toshihiko Fukawa, who sought a solution for the inconvenience of putting on socks and shoes for short winter trips. Subu’s design is a hybrid of a sandal and a slipper, featuring a slip-on silhouette that functions like a puffer jacket for the feet. The sandals are constructed with durable, water-resistant Teflon-coated nylon uppers, a plush fleece lining, and a robust, multi-layered sole that provides cushioned comfort suitable for both indoor and outdoor surfaces. This focus on functional simplicity and understated design is deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics.
