Japanese label Sulvam was founded in 2013 by Teppei Fujita, a former pattern maker for Yohji Yamamoto. Drawing from his technical background, Fujita centers the brand on an improvisational design process—the name itself is derived from the Latin word for "improvisation"—where he crafts garments by hand directly from the pattern. The result is a collection defined by deconstructed tailoring, with signature details like frayed edges, exposed linings, and asymmetrical cuts that challenge traditional menswear forms. Sulvam produces fluid, often gender-neutral ready-to-wear, including sculptural jackets, flowing trousers, and uniquely layered knits in a predominantly dark palette. The brand quickly gained international acclaim, winning the Tokyo Fashion Award shortly after its debut and presenting collections at Paris Fashion Week. Fujita’s work is celebrated for its fusion of punk-inspired elements with meticulous craftsmanship, creating a style that is both rebellious and refined.
