Founded in 2005 by Tao Kurihara, a protégé of Junya Watanabe, Tao Comme des Garçons (often simply Tao) represents a softer, more whimsical counterpoint to the rigorous avant-garde of the main Comme des Garçons line. Kurihara, a Central Saint Martins graduate, initially made waves with her ability to transform humble materials—like vintage handkerchiefs and paper—into sculptural, romantic garments. After a hiatus starting in 2011 to focus on the Tricot line, the brand was fully revived and rebranded from Tricot to Tao in 2022, cementing Kurihara’s unique voice within the Comme universe.
