Theyskens' Theory was the critically acclaimed collaboration between Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens and the New York-based contemporary brand Theory. Launched in 2010 as a capsule collection, it was born from Theory CEO Andrew Rosen's desire to infuse the brand's accessible, minimalist staples with a high-fashion, designer point of view. Theyskens, then known for his romantic, gothic-tinged creations at Rochas and Nina Ricci, was appointed Artistic Director of Theory in late 2010 following the capsule's success. The collection merged two distinct worlds: Theyskens' sophisticated, often moody and intricate design sensibility with Theory's expertise in creating practical, well-fitting urban essentials. Theyskens' Theory was celebrated for its elevated yet wearable pieces, such as sharply tailored blazers, luxurious silk blouses, modern suiting, and perfectly crafted leather jackets. It brought a more directional, editorial edge to the contemporary market at a price point below luxury designer brands. Although the line was a press favorite and developed a cult following, it was ultimately integrated back into the main Theory collection in 2013 before Theyskens departed the company in June 2014. Reports suggested that while the collection garnered great reviews, sales did not meet expectations as the designs were sometimes considered too "advanced" for the core Theory customer. Today, pieces from Theyskens' Theory are sought after on resale markets, remembered as a benchmark for designer-contemporary collaborations.
