Founded in 1981 by Eric Swenson and Fausto Vitello, Thrasher began as a San Francisco-based magazine to promote their Independent Truck Company. It quickly evolved into the unapologetic, authoritative voice of skateboarding culture, cementing its place as the scene’s bible. Guided for 26 years by the late, iconic editor Jake Phelps, the brand championed a raw, anti-establishment identity under the motto “Skate and Destroy.” This ethos resonated with the punk and hardcore scenes, creating a deep-seated authenticity that set it apart from more commercial publications. The brand’s apparel, particularly t-shirts and hoodies featuring the iconic Banco font and flame logos, began as merchandise for its loyal readership of skaters.
