Founded in Paris in 1965 by Emanuel Ungaro, who trained under master couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga, the house quickly became synonymous with a defiant, sensual femininity. Ungaro distinguished his work through a masterful use of bold color, mixed prints, and artful draping, creating a look that was both sophisticated and provocative. His designs, particularly during the brand's influential peak in the 1980s, celebrated the female form with richly embellished, romantic silhouettes that stood apart from the era's sharper power dressing. The brand was a go-to for glamorous women, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Catherine Deneuve. After Emanuel Ungaro’s retirement in 2004, the house entered a turbulent period marked by a revolving door of creative directors and a widely criticized collaboration with Lindsay Lohan that damaged its prestige. The brand has since aimed to recapture its heritage. In 2021, designer Kobi Halperin was appointed Creative Director, tasked with reviving the house's DNA for a modern audience. His collections focus on reinterpreting the founder’s signature femininity and flair for elegant, wearable pieces, signaling a new chapter for the storied Parisian label.
