Vetements, French for “clothing,” was founded in 2014 by Georgian designer Demna Gvasalia and his brother Guram as a design collective in Paris. Now based in Zürich, the brand quickly gained cult status for its radical and deconstructed approach to streetwear. Inspired by everyday garments, urban subcultures, and the internet, Vetements challenges the conventions of high fashion with oversized silhouettes, asymmetric details, and a raw, unfinished style. The brand's philosophy often involves appropriating and recontextualizing familiar items, famously turning a DHL t-shirt into a coveted luxury piece. For its Spring/Summer 2017 collection, Vetements collaborated with 17 heritage brands, including Levi's, to rework their iconic products. The Vetements x Levi's pieces featured reconstructed and spliced-together denim, creating unique, high-concept versions of classic jeans and trucker jackets that became instant streetwear grails. After Demna's departure in 2019 to focus on his role at Balenciaga, Guram Gvasalia took over as creative director, continuing the brand's disruptive and anti-fashion legacy.
