Founded in Paris in 1912 by Madeleine Vionnet, the house of Vionnet is celebrated for revolutionizing womenswear with the invention of the bias cut. Vionnet, a trained dressmaker, rejected the rigid, corseted silhouettes of her time, instead championing designs that followed the body’s natural lines. Inspired by ancient Greek art, she developed a signature style of elegant, fluid draping that created a sense of movement and freedom. Her apparently simple gowns were the result of complex, geometric construction and meticulous craftsmanship, earning her the title “architect among dressmakers.” The house was a dominant force in 1930s haute couture, dressing icons like Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo, before closing in 1939 at the start of World War II.
