The anonymous libretto opens with Saint Paul's anguished cry from Romans 7:24--"O wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?"--and traces a spiritual journey from the despair of humanity's sinful condition to the assurance of redemption through Christ. The cantata is remarkable for its austere opening chorus, in which Bach weaves the chorale melody Herr Jesu Christ, ich schrei zu dir into an intricate double canon, symbolizing the inescapable demands of divine law before concluding with a chorale of serene confidence. Ich elender Mensch, wer wird mich erlösen received its premiere on October 3, 1723, at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig under the composer's direction.
