Dedicated to his longtime friend and patron Henry Litolff, the concerto broke new ground in its integration of soloist and orchestra, presenting a single continuous structure of four interrelated movements rather than the traditional three. The edition by Bernhard Stavenhagen, one of Liszt's pupils, later helped preserve the composer's interpretive style and nuances for modern performance.
