Every part of their process carries meaning — the materials, the colours, the designs — and their identification with particular gods and rituals of the ancient Huichol world continues in daily life today. Their motifs speak: the deer, the pine tree and the whirlwind are associated with the deity Tamat’s Kauyumari, who shaped their world. The zigzag lines radiating from living things represent communication with the gods, and the butterfly recalls Itzpapalotl, the Obsidian Butterfly.
