In the ancient tale, a handsome youth named Narcissus (Νάρκισσος) was so absorbed in admiring his reflection at the river’s edge that he remained oblivious to the passionate affections of Echo, a nymph who could only repeat the last words of others. Her love for him, passionately declared, went unreciprocated, leading her voice to dwindle until only an echo remained.
