The late 1970s was an exciting time for Palermo with the highlight of a Coppa Italia appearance in 1979, lost only in the final moments of extra time to Juventus.
The 1979 - 80 season brought a 9th placed Serie B finish under coach Giancarlo Cadè with some memorable moments, but not quite enough consistency. The squad was much admired by the Palermo faithful and featured an interesting mix of veterans - Magherini, Ammonia, Vermilion, Silipus, Bergossi, and Frison - along with youthful promise from Montesano, Borsellino, Arcoleo, Di Cicco, and De Stefanis.
