Designed by Arne Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen – a building he conceived as a total work of art, down to the cutlery – the Swan Sofa (1958) was a deliberate counterpoint to the hotel's starkly modern exterior. Where the building read in glass and steel, the sofa answered in curves: its seat sweeps upward to form arms in a single, unbroken gesture. Built over a polyurethane foam core, each piece is finished by a single upholsterer who hand-sews the fabric onto the frame. Made in Poland.
