This specific reference came after the Matte dial variants of the Submariner and introduced the first gloss dial, plus white gold surround markers that would set the design language for all future dials. The 16800 reference showcases the rugged tool-watch nature of the Submariner and incorporates vintage elements, such as tritium luminous markers that age and patina over time, rather than modern luminova counterparts. The 1980s were a turning point for Rolex as manufacturing these Subs still involved aluminum inserts and tritium dials that would age over time.
