Unveiled at Basel 1976, designed by Gerald Genta in a single overnight session at the request of Henri Stern, it arrived as a provocation — a stainless steel sports watch priced at levels the market had previously reserved exclusively for precious metal dress watches. Retailers refused it. Collectors were bewildered. Time, as it invariably does with genuinely original thinking, rendered the correct verdict., The original 3700 in stainless steel is the Nautilus in its purest and most historically significant form — the porthole-inspired case, horizontal dial embossing, and integrated bracelet exactly as Genta conceived them, powered by the Jaeger-LeCoultre derived calibre 28-255 C. No subsequent Nautilus reference, however magnificent, can claim this particular provenance.
