The reference is structural rather than decorative. The fabric is built from two fundamentally different yarns, a No. 5 count rope-dyed indigo warp with deliberately strong unevenness built into it, producing the slub character and deeply saturated blue that defines the face of the cloth, and a finer No. 8 count weft dyed through a separate process to a distinctly deeper indigo concentration. Woven slowly on vintage looms, the contrast between the thick uneven warp and the finer darker weft creates immediate visual complexity. As the two yarns fade at different rates over years of wear, the deeper weft indigo gradually asserts itself and pushes through, producing an increasingly unusual and personal surface that only emerges through sustained hard use.
