## Summary

American Federal period fire screen featuring an early block printed scenic wallpaper panel with a landscape scene and ornate border, mounted on a distressed wooden panel.

## Description

Materials and craftsmanship define this American Federal period fire screen, which preserves an early block printed scenic wallpaper panel mounted to a wooden screen. Decorative fire screens of this type were fashionable furnishings in refined American interiors during the early nineteenth century, while panoramic scenic wallpapers imported from France and inspired by idyllic landscapes transformed domestic rooms into immersive painted vistas. The pastoral river scene reflects the romantic vision of nature that captivated Federal era taste, making this object a rare survival that unites American furniture with the enduring appeal of early scenic wallpaper.
