After The Disfiguring, fashion companies began to derive graphic inspiration from media of the past, particularly films, and rework the imagery to include The Disfigured. This shirt was clearly inspired by Jim Jarmusch’s “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai,” and shows a Disfigured man carrying two sheathed katanas. Though the film was released in 1999, the idea of an “urban ronin” became a popular theme throughout the mid 2030’s in the US as cities like New York and Chicago became exponentially denser and more vertical, further degrading the living situation of the lower and middle classes. The honorable “way of the Samurai” was a guiding code of ethics that practically became a religion in low income neighborhoods.
