In 1922, French organist Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) initially composed Cortège et Litanie , Op. 19, No. 2, for small orchestra as incidental music to a play. Publishing it in a set of four pieces for the piano, he performed it in one of his recitals and later arranged it for organ and orchestra. The Cortège alludes to a funeral procession, evoked with a graceful four-part chorale. The Litanie , referring to the prayer sung during the procession, is represented by a repetitive, limpid chant. The prayer and the chorale are then played simultaneously. This Masters reprint edition is presented in its arrangement for solo organ.
